Hi Jessica,

Thanks for your interest!

The name 'The Red Hippo Arts Project' was naturally generated. A small group of artists from emerge (http://emergemontreal2009.blogspot.com) were interested in collaborating on a arts project, by which they were open-minded as to what direction the project would take. Around the same time, Sue Brotherwood read an article in the Montreal Gazette about a teacher and principal from Montreal who had traveled to Uganda on holiday. The article described how these two individuals were so moved by their experiences that they began the Namuwongo Literacy Project (http://namuwongoliteracyproject.blogspot.com).
emerge then, invited Howard Shapiro and Judy Labow to come speak to us about the project they had begun. At this meeting, Howard also showed us his photography which demonstrated his love for hippos. At times, the hippos look red....et voila! Once our arts project was in it's preliminary stages, the name stuck.

There you have the history of the name 'The Red Hippo Arts Project'.

[...] Sunday we had the privilege of listening to my cousin Drew Sandbulte speak about his work in Uganda. Drew lives with and cares for many children who formerly lived on the streets. The youngest are 3 years old. His organization, called NESCO, could use YOUR support. If you are interested in learning more about Drew’s work, please don’t hesitate to ask for his contact information. He’s in the states through October. Here’s a story about Drew’s work with NESCO: http://www.theredhippo.org/blog/?p=94 [...]
